Good Morning from balmy Iowa this Xmas week.
40 in Iowa in December? HELL YEAH!
Many things have been going on with the Cubs this past month. The Winter Meetings brought much excitement but provided little in big trades or deals…..just as I had hoped it would.
See,
If the New Regime would have went out and purchased a few big ticket players I would have been excited for a moment, but then, when reality set in that nothing had really changed for the Cub Mentality I would walk the halls of my office wringing my hands.
I am glad that our new Regime has put the brakes on and stopped the madness.
Does this team need and enema? Yes, and Theo is there with his gloves on.

Dale Sveum new man in the Dugout.\
Dale Sveum (who was a pretty darned good player batting hitting .236 with 69 home runs) was brought in to act as a new type of manager that can actually lead this team instead of wash his hands of it midway through the season RE: Lou Pinnella. How many times did we hear “Sweet” Lou say basically this: I have done all I can, it is up to them to perform. This should not be the case with Dale, He has a history of being no-nonsense and aggressive (maybe too at times with getting so many people thrown out at home). He should keep a handle on our new roster.
And speaking of our new roster. Good lord changes have been made that needed to be done years ago. Ramirez is now a Brewer, Zambrano is on double secret probation with a tendency toward being flushed to single A, Pena is gone, Koye Hill has finally been put to rest (The catcher impostor as Das Hoopes calls him) and many other changes. Kerry Wood will be back and now we have potential to get Paul Maholm (From Pirates) as a semi-fresh left hander as well as contracted Jeff Baker, Blake DeWitt, Matt Garza, Geovany Soto, Ian Stewart, and Randy Wells…although I think Randy Wells is lost cause….but I will defer to Theo on this one. We also dumped Tyler Colvin and DJ LeMahieu and acquired Ian Stewart. Got all that?
And check this out from Paul Sullivan’s Article on the Trib:
Power outage: Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Pena combined for 54 home runs in 2011, 36 percent of the team’s totals. New right-fielder David DeJesus had 10 with the A’s in 2011, while Stewart had none for the Rockies. Wood suggested to WGN Morning News anchor Larry Potash that power isn’t a priority of the new regime.
“We’ll go out and do the best we can,” he said. “I think they’re going to put baseball players on the field. I don’t think we need big power hitters. The first 21/2 months the wind blows in so no one is going to leave (the park). And then when the wind is blowing out, (anyone) can hit one out.”
DAS HOOPES has expounded on that last fact tirelessly (albeit loudly and over overprice crappy beer) that power really doesn’t do us any good for a good chunk of the home games, and that we need to be more concerned about small ball. I agree.
The single reason we have so many Fat Cub fans: McWrigley

Now please burn it as soon as possible: McWrigley.
‘As predicted by my beautiful wife this McDonalds will soon be a ugly memory of the past. On our inaugural first trip to wrigley as a newly minted couple, she was having the time of her life hanging with Das Hoopes and the MetroWebers. When she glanced over and started laughing at the horribly out of place Mc D’s and stated “that can’t be there for long” well 3 years later you have been proven correct and the Ricketts have purchased it. At the very least it will be a parking lot soon.
Lets all make sure we pull the handle at the same time so nobody falls in.
That is right, this team STINKS. At the beginning of the season I tend to be be the guy that looks at things in a postive light…..it all stems from a pretty rough childhood and my love for the underdog and loathing for all things mundane….but I digress.
Can you imagine being Len & Bob or Mr. Pat Hughs and Keith? Think about it. You have your dream job, you go into work and you get to sit around and talk about baseball all summer long, I mean how cool is that? Then comes along the Ricketts and their bloated, baseball ignorant GM and then proceed to deficate out in the middle of my Wrigley Field. Day and and day out I hear the talking heads trying somehow to keep us interested and not turning off the radio/tv, for the most part they are successful and I keep listening. Here is your medal, congrats on being the only voices in the sport that are capable of polishing a turd known as the 2011 Cubs Season.
Here is what needs to happen for the rest of the year.
- Trade Big Z. Yes lets get some money for him before he kills his leg by breaking a bat. Look I am not angry he did it, in fact I think people are making a big deal out of it just for the hell of it, but to be clear, the anger managment it working but you can see a blow up on the horizon. We need to start over.
- Keep Playing the Kids
- Castro is a keeper
- Darwin is a keeper
- Coleman is a keeper (not really a kid but this is my blog)
- Campana is a keeper
- FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BENCH SORIANO. His is a good man and comes from a great family but get him off the field. Get what you can for him, move on.
- Get rid of Jim Hendry, some how, some way.
- Start to live with the fact that the Ricketts are not baseball people, I can live with it and so can you. Lets just try to send a message to them on who they should listened too.
- Keep Playing Fuk. He is gone this year and we can make more money to pay off sorianos contract with all the LAME “fuk u do me” t-shirts I saw in Wrigleyville. Before you go and say that is only tourists, I can assure you it is not, I saw plenty of locals with them on.
My oh my.
T
I am from Iowa so it takes me a little longer before I hit the Cub Panic button, around here we call it hoping for the best…..
No panic….yet. I do want to make sure that I state the obvious to our seemingly Milton Bradley foolish Cubs Organization…..listen up, this stuff is easy.
This is 2011 and there are some modern baseball facts that work for the Cubs
- YOU BUY GOOD PITCHERS AND KEEP THEM, yes from time to time you can farm up 1 or 2 in a 5 year span but they are called closers. Why is it when we get one or two solid starts we either wear them out and/or trade them?
- Nuture position players and give them decent contracts. Year in and year out Iowa, Peoria, Nashville, and Idaho send up quality players that (as DAS HOOPES puts it) get immediatly “Cubbed”. We don’t need big contract players, just guys that love the game and show up everyday….and have pitching to back them up. HELLO?
One exception to this rule…..I do have a Man-crush on a certain St. Louis 1st Baseman. - Spend the Money on Real Coaching. Don’t get me wrong here, I think Quade is doing a decent job, but just like watching Sanberg stumble his first few weeks in Iowa I know it takes time to get your feet underneath you. My point is that if Q goes by the wayside we need to go after no-holds-barred-take-no-prisioner type of coach.
Thank you for listening to my rant.
T!
How I roll, and how the Cubs do too.
First off sorry for being a little light on the posts lately, Mrs. Taco has my son in her belly and we had a little bit of a scare with the doctors….don’t worry all is well we have the same worries now as the rest of the expecting parents in the world…….
So far this season…..
I have to say I am still sticking with my 80+ wins prediction for our beloved Cubs. I don’t know about you but with this team (as opposed to last years) I always feel like we can come back and do it. Our bats are not dead although they are a little sleepy when they shouldn’t be.
Rating : WIFF
.121 average in only 58 at-bats.Yes it is time to send him down the block. Lord knows the Icubs could use a fan attendence boost. I can’t really tell what is going on with him, I think might be showing up what he really is….average. I will be able to report more once he gets down here.
The Hug that makes your go hmmmm or ewwwhmmm. Lets hope for more hmmm.
Do hear that Cubs (Ricketts)? Do you hear it?
That is opportunity knocking. Time to pull out all of the stops and get Mr. Pujols in a Cubs uniform for 2012. Look I know many of you thinkt it would be another contract much like the Soriano contract, (Notice the graphic below when I did a google search for horrible baseball contracts…circled in red for the optically challenged.)

I hope this makes your feel better too….of course then again, DAS Hoopes would just say this is a list of false dreams and promises. I tend to be more of a Half Full type a guy
Speaking of Das Hoopes…check out his loading dock this morning.
“Joe Girardi has the best job in the world,” Dawson said. “I can’t really envision him leaving the setup that he has. He’s in a competitive situation every year.”
Why is it that when anyone brings up managing for the Chicago Cubs, everyone thinks you would be nuts to take it?
Huge Market,
Huge Fan Base,
Big Money,
And yet nobody wants it and those that do, well Mr. Dawson had a comment on that too:
“I really still can’t envision Ryno wanting to manage at this level. It just seems to be kind of far-fetched.”
So the two guys I think are the only ones capible of doing it shouldn’t or won’t do it. Look I know this team this year has been one HUGE pile of wookie dung and we should remind them daily how they have made us feel this year, but you have to see that we are just a few players from being right back at the top again. I have drank the kool-aid on castro, I think he is our future, and I love Marlon and root for the ever present Micah, our farm teams are all at the top and making (or close to making) the play-offs. We have the system in place and the players, all we need is a manager. Lets quit shuffling players out to other teams (yes I am still pissed about De Rosa, Reed, Lilly) and focus on fixing our management once and for all. Also while I am bitching about the long haul (or the lack there of) can we please quit looking batting and focus on our horrible pitching? Z is going to come back, Demp is doing great, but we need to gather our bullpen up and make it strong again.
So we are over half way through the season and I have some thoughts…
Before I get too far into this I need to say goodbye to Sweet Lou. I, for one, always enjoyed having him as our manager and he is going to missed. Classy guy, Classy Career, and he did make the most of the team that Hendry build. Going to miss you lou.
Lets take a look.
BATTING AVERAGE .259 16th Overall
HOME RUNS 96 12th Overall
RUNS BATTED IN 393 20th Overall
HITS 830 16th over all.
Yikes! It just goes to show there is some serious trouble here. Why is it we can blast the phillys and then the ***-strokes kill us the next game?
Wouldn’t it be nice if the guys could somehow pull this all together and give the perfect retirement gift.
